BradenStumborg of Humboldt took first place at the Flying Beaver Big Air Competition at Kipabiskau Regional Park on June 24.

Stumborg topped the podium with his run that gave him 57.17 points beating out second place by nearly ten points.

Stumborg said he was happy with his performance on the weekend.

“I felt pretty good,” said Stumborg. “It was alright, I could have threw a few harder tricks in there.”

Stumborg said he is looking forward to competing in provincials in Regina on July 22 and said he is setting his sights on gold.

“I want to win it, definitely,” said Stumborg. “I think I have got a good chance.” Stumborg has been riding for nearly a decade and said he is looking forward to moving ahead in his career.

“I’m hoping to ride on the pro tour next year,” he said.“I’m going to go down to Florida again this winter and hopefully things turn out.”

In the summer, Stumborg trains hard, hitting the water every weekend as well as a couple times a week. During the cold winter months, he travels south to Florida, where he gives wakeboarding lessons, and trains as well. Stumborg added that he is also looking forward to the Wakestock world Series on August 10-13 in Toronto.

Other competitors that took part in the Flying Beaver competition include Ashley Leugner, who also took first place in the Women’s category. Leugner said she was frustrated with her performance on the weekend.

“I was not happy with my run at all,” she said. “I had a great weekend though. ”Leugner qualified for the Pro Wakeboarding circuit this year, something she said has been a life-long dream of hers.

“That was my dream,” said Leugner with excitement. Leugner placed 11th in Acworth, GA on May 4-5 with 39.44 points. Her next stop is in Reno, NV where she will compete in the Mastercraft wakeboard tour on July 28. Leugner said she is shooting for a medal in Reno, but remains pessimistic about it.

“My goal is podium, but my training in the last month hasn’t been the best,” she said.

Finishing behind Leugner at the Big Air competition at Kipabiskau was Jennesta Wildeman, who finished with 26.34 points.

Finishing behind Stumborg in the Men’s 1 category was Anthony Hollick who finished the tournament with 47.5 points. In third place it was Corwin Pearce with 41 points.

In Men’s 2, it was Riley Jestin who took the top spot with 20.84 points. In the boys 1 division, it was Brett Morris who took first with 11.5 points and in boys 2, it was Tyson Taylor who topped the standings with his run of 10.67 points.

Vice-president of Kipabiskau Watersports special events, Mike Greier, who also competed at the tournament, said the weekend was a huge success. “It was an awesome weekend,” said Greier. “The weather couldn’t have been better.” Greier added that the quality of riders was second to none.

“We couldn’t have had a better group of guys out there for the tournament. Greier said the only downfall at the competition this year was the spectator turnout. “One of the things that was too bad was, I guess the spectators,” said Greier. “But that was due a lot to it being so early in the year.”

Greier added that he would like to thank all of the sponsors and volunteers who came out to help for the weekend.
