KWSC Newsletter - vol.1
KWSC NEW EXECUTIVE
Dear KWSC member,
Effective September 1, 2005 Kyle Nontell and Leigh Estabrook have officially taken the club by the reigns and will start the daunting task of planning next year's numerous events. On behalf of the KWSC, Kyle and Leigh would like to thank Dawn Marleau and Heather Reese for their many hours of volunteer work and commitment to the Club.
Your New Executive
After a seven year stint of waterskiing and wakeboarding at a nationally competitive level, a course of injuries prevailed forcing Kyle out of competition. In recent years Kyle has turned to other aspects of the sport. In 2003 he was the chairperson for the 2003 Wakeboard Provincials hosted by KWSC. Since 2002 Kyle has acquired his nationally accredited level three coaching certification. As a member of one of the founding families of the KWSC, over the last twenty years Kyle has seen the club in times of idle stalemate and times as one of the largest water sports clubs in the country. Remembering the glory days of the club, Kyle is determined to see the KWSC grow in all aspects and become a strong part of the local community once again.
A newcomer to Kipabiskau Lake in 2005, Leigh is passionate about towed water sports. In 2005 she competed in the water ski slalom event at the Alberta Provincials (gold medal), Saskatchewan Provincials (gold medal) and Canadian Nationals (silver medal). Leigh also likes to ride a wake skate, wake board and in 2006 will be training to compete in all three classic water ski events; slalom, trick and jump. Although Leigh is a competitor, her real passion is helping other people enjoy all aspects of towed sports.
"After seeing all those kids with smiling faces at the July Learn to Ski Clinic I'm convinced that KWSC has tremendous potential for becoming a training ground for wake boarding, skiing and jump. Even if kids do not want to compete, our club can become the catalyst for improved skills, fun times on the lake, not to mention building lifelong friendships," Leigh said after the clinic.
Leigh is pleased to have been asked to join Kyle on the KWSC executive.
Houskeeping
In an effort to conserve expenses in printing and postage, as well as our beautiful boreal forest, we would like to switch our method of contact with the membership strictly to email. Please email Kyle at kyle_kwsc@hotmail.com with your name, members under your family name (family memberships only), email address, and phone number. We will have a newsletter before Christmas with confirmed dates, as well as forms for membership, the water ski and wakeboard clinic, and information packages regarding opportunities available to members.
New In 2006
Your new executive has high, yet realistic, expectations for the growth of the club. The club will have many challenges ahead. For example, the water ski jump is in need of complete reconstruction or replacement, demand for a wakeboard park is on the rise, and major repairs to the slalom course are needed. The KWSC's membership and clinic fees have remained by far the lowest in the province for many years and as a result we have not been able to sustain the club in positive growth. An assessment of current fee structures is necessary and changes will be made accordingly.
"Our goal is growth, building a strong foundation and ensuring KWSC meets the needs of it's members in 2006 and beyond"
In order to raise money for a growing, successful and sustainable water sports club, the following is a list of tentative events and dates:
Saturday, May 20th - Slave Auction
Know someone who needs help opening up their cabin? Dock and boat lift installation, cleaning, landscaping - ANYTHING you need done! We will auction off our volunteer's time and skills.
Supper and social to follow.
Saturday, July 1st - Water ski and Wakeboard Show
July 4th - 7th - Annual Water ski and Wakeboard Clinic
Recreational tournament to follow.
Saturday, July 15th - Wakeboard Contest & 3rd Annual Flying Beaver Big Air Contest
Cabaret to follow.
Date TBA - Practical boat driving clinic
The success of these events will be in large part determined by those who volunteer their time for the benefit of the club.
In closing, we open ourselves to your thoughts on ways to improve and grow the KWSC. We are all members of this club and we will all benefit from each other's hard work, commitment, and passion towards water sports.
Sincerely,
Kyle Nontell (President)
Leigh Estabrook (Treasurer)
Let's work together today for the betterment of towed water sports tomorrow.
